Respiratory AllergyAn allergy is defined as a condition where the immune system overreacts to a substance called an allergen. Respiratory allergies occur around the respiratory tract. Allergens and irritants can both cause respiratory allergy. Allergens include: pollens, animal danders, dust, mites, and even cockroaches. Irritants which can cause a respiratory allergy are: outdoor air pollution, cigarette smoke, and strong odor like paint. Allergic rhinitis and asthma come under respiratory allergy. Asthma: Allergic asthma is a type of asthma that is triggered by an allergy say pollen or mold spores. Air is normally taken into the body through the nose and windpipe and into the bronchial tubes. At the end of the tubes are tiny air sacs called alveoli that deliver fresh air to the blood. The air sacs also collect stale air, which is exhaled out of the body. During normal breathing, the bands of muscle surrounding the airways are relaxed and air moves freely. But during an asthma attack there are obstructions to the free movement of the air. Diesel Exhausts: Diesel exhaust can be defined as a prevalent airborne contaminant which is found in work places where diesel powered equipment is used. With extensive use of diesel equipments more workers are exposed to diesel exhaust. Those people who are adversely affected with diesel exhaust are: tunnel and bridge workers, mine workers, railroad workers, truck drivers, loading dock workers, material handling machine operators, long shoring employees and garage workers. The health hazards that these workers usually face are: respiratory diseases, cancer, nausea and headaches. Pets Allergy: In domestic pets the main ingredient present which causes an allergy is invisible flakes of animal skin or dander which causes sneezing, stuffy nose, itchy and watery eyes. An allergic reaction may also be caused due to pet saliva. Usually pet dander and saliva is harmless, but you have a sensitive immune system, these allergens can enter your body and cause a reaction. The best way to treat pet allergy is to avoid exposure to animals Hay Fever or Rhinitis: Allergic response to the male component of the plant reproductive system or other microscopic substances those are present only at certain times of the year. Allergic rhinitis can be perennial or seasonal. In the spring season, pollinating trees are responsible for causing hay fever, during the summer time grasses and weeds produce the pollen. In the fall, ragweed is usually the culprit. Hay fever can also be caused by fungus releasing its reproductive cells, called spores. Perennial allergic rhinitis is caused by agents that are present throughout the year. Mould Allergy: Moulds can be defined as microscopic organisms, which are made of long filaments called hyphae. Moulds are visible in breads, cheese and books. These spores are carried in the air and may be present throughout the year. Moulds are easily found in damp areas like basements, swamp coolers, bathrooms, stuffed animals and fabrics. Damp vegetation, soil and compost can also cause moulds to form. To prevent the formation of moulds reduce dampness as much as possible. Sinusitis: Sinusitis refers to the inflammation or swelling, of the tissue lining the sinuses. Normally, sinuses are filled with air, but when sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, germs (bacteria, viruses and fungi) can grow and cause an infection. The factors that can cause sinus blockage include the common cold, allergic rhinitis or a deviated septum. |
